They sit down and eat meals and then they get up and they do what they have to do. They don't mess around with eating stuff while walking. In fact, if you do that with anything besides ice cream, I don't think they like it very much
-The coffee is just amazingly good. It is all cafe con leche (like espresso with milk), but again, you have to sit there and drink it. You don't get stuff to go. You just don't.
-My girlfriend and I ate at some of the best restaurants we have ever been to. EVER. We live in a major east coast city that has some pretty nice restaurants, but in terms of food quality, decor, atmosphere, and service, the places in BA just blew everything else away, as far as I am concerned. All the pasta was hand-made. If you want to find fresh hand-made pasta in the US you are going to have to get yourself an Italian grandmother or something because no restaurant is going to do it for you, because they don't think you are worth it.
-Buenos Aires is really clean, with lots of nice big parks, and slender, good-looking people.
-There were no obviously drunken, crazy, ranting homeless people. With all the huge beautiful parks, they seem like they would be a natural place for people who like to yell stuff to no one in particular to hang out, but no. This may have been a function of the nice neighborhoods we were staying in, but it seemed consistent throughout the different areas of the city. I know that if any city in the US had parks like BA did, that they would be filled with people who slept there all day. Oh, and there was no trash in these parks. Did I mention that? It was like being in Canada or something.
-Some restaurants don't open until 9 pm. People do stuff late. All kinds of people walk their dogs at like 3 am on a Tuesday, yet everything is open in the morning. It's like a riddle.
-Buenos Aires is awesome.

So I'm back from there. I've been eating a bunch at the City Girl Cafe in Inman, and they have a good salad (spinach, onion, chicken, some kind of cheese) that I always get. While you're there, you can say hi to my good friend Beth, who told me to start this blog because she was sick of me telling her what I had eaten every day. They have good music, too.

Also in Inman is Montien, which is a good Thai place. It is very red inside. I had the most boring dish I possibly could have ordered, the chicken and broccoli, but it was good and I enjoyed it. I thought about getting chicken massaman curry but as I have said previously, that is special and to be saved for special occasions otherwise I will start down the slippery slope of becoming a shut-in who starts only wearing the same pants because they are "the ones I like".

I've been working on a few projects recently that have turned out ok. Projects #1 is the mock mashed potatoes. Bascially you steam a head of cauliflower for about 15 and then mash it up in a food processor with a tbsp of butter and some garlic. It's a pretty convincing subsititute. Unfortunately in my zeal I put in enough garlic to bring tears to my eyes. I ate this yesterday and I can still taste the garlic. There are a lot of people out there who are all, "You can never have enough garlic!" I used too much garlic. I promise.

The other project is trying to eat more cabbage. Cabbage is good for you, and I eat a lot of vegetables, so I'm kind of looking for new vegetables and new ways to eat them. I bought a head of cabbage (which weighs about 3-5 pounds, it's pretty heavy), chopped it, and stir fried it with carrots, onion, garlic, and a peanut sauce I made out of omega-3 peanut butter and soy sauce. It's not bad, although I can imagine other people not loving this.

So I don’t really update anymore. I’m sorry about that. Here are some things I ate last week while I was on vacation in my house:

Salmon w/ butter sauce
Hamburgers w/ extra lean beef
Turkeyburgers
French mix of beans with wax beans, green beans, carrots
Broccoli
Greens+ powder (this is sort of like a vegetable when I am feeling lazy)
Fish oil
A ton of mixed nuts. Too many, really. (Did you know that hazelnuts are sometimes called “philberts”? Now you do!)
Omega-3 Eggs w/ pesto, sour cream and salsa. This may not sound that appetizing, but really it’s good. Don’t judge me.
Really this was about it. Not too much variety

Oh, lots of holiday stuff, too. Xmas cookies are brutal. They just sit there all helpless and waiting for you and before you know it there are crumbs all over you and you snap out of it, dazed and greasy.

Ate at a few restaurants:

Massaman curry again at Spice and Rice in Inman Sq. I was really torn on this one. I’ve eaten at Spice and Rice before, and I had the massaman curry, so I felt like you know I should really try something else and test out their menu, but then I was like that massaman curry was so stupidly good that if I get something else and it is not as good then I will be disappointed and sad and angry at myself for not getting the massaman curry in the first place. So I just got what I had before. This is the reasoning that leads people to order the same foods over and over again until they are just scared to order anything else. I felt this was about peanut butter and jelly sandwiches when I was young. I knew I liked peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, so why would I risk eating something else that I didn’t know about when I knew what I liked already? Generally this kind of reasoning does not produce a very interesting life for whoever lives by it, however, so I have tried to stay away from it. In the case of Spice and Rice, however, I was in a particularly fragile mental state for some reason and needed some kind of comfort food. Massaman curry was my port in the storm.

Texas chili at Redbones in Davis. This was a good bowl of chili with several large chunks of quality beef in it. I didn’t get the sense that they were just the scraps that they couldn’t serve without drowning them in a meaty broth; this was decent beef. Good and covered with cheese. It did cost like $7, however, which is a lot to pay for chili, so this is not like a great value or anything. Tasty, but you pay for it. It was ably washed down by a Bud Light.

Huh. Seemed like I ate out more last week. Oh well.

Today Morning:
-coffee (that's it. kind of in a hurry.)

Lunch:
-spinach salad w/ broccoli, tomatos, mushrooms, egg, turkey, tuna, feta, craisins, pineapple, and bacon with “oriental” dressing. This is the awesome salad that I eat at work every day. Sometimes it has green pepper in it.
-fish oil
-water. I drink upwards of 160 oz of water every day. That is just at work. It is really dry there.

Dinner:
I have no idea. If I know my patterns, probably some fish and vegetables. You never know when some spinach souffle might pop up, though. I'm feelin' a little frisky today.

I am not very good at this these days. My apologies, blogging community. in payment for actually turning up to read this blog even though i have not updated in nearly a month, i will take jesse's suggestion to post my very first "what I listened to today." i will select a few songs that i listened to over the past 24 hours.

"addiction" - kanye west
this is a nice song that i think is about being addicted to things that are bad for you, and having a girlfriend who only really goes out with you because you have drugs or booze or something. i kind of forget but it's got a great beat, etc. the skits on his albums are actually pretty funny, too, which is nice. so many skits are terrible.

"i'll believe in anything" - wolf parade
when i first heard this, i was like "what kind of crazy time signature is this in?" when i counted it out it was 6/8, which is not all that crazy, but it's got a cool off-balance feel to it. i always seem to hear this song when i am approaching the school i work at.

"she said, she said" - black keys
a not very good cover of the beatles song. it doesn't add very much and it just sounds badly done. they have much better songs.

"f*ck the ying yang twins" - ying yang twins
i am not proud of this. the ying yang twins are ridiculous and kind of sleazy. i don't think i listened to this the whole way through.

"almost was good enough" - songs:ohia
i really like jason molina and this is a really good song for a sad grey winter day. it's got some interesting tension and lonesomeness in it despite a full sound.

"tiny paintings" - architecture in helsinki
this is a pretty silly song with funny instruments, but it's melodically interesting enough to not be too obnoxious/precious. i'm not sure what to think of the guy with the high voice in this song. i'm alternately and annoyed and ok with him. if you're in a bad mood, this song is not going to help.

"banquet" - bloc party
this is a good song, but after listening to silent alarm again, i don't like it as much as i thought i did, despite the great energy the songs have. the songs just aren't all that strong. except this one, though. it's good.

Back to our regularly scheduled programming:

Today Morning:
-protein bar
-mixed nuts
-2 clementines

Lunch:
-the big spinach salad i get every day that makes me think doing this blog is getting boring. spinach, marinated mushrooms, green pepper, broccoli, tomato, egg, turkey, feta, craisins, soybeans, and balsamic vinaigrette dressing. i mean, it's awesome. it's like the perfect lunch. it's an "all you can fit onto your tray" buffet-style salad bar, where they charge you one price no matter how much you cram onto your salad tray. I of course build a huge salad that weighs many pounds and eat it for basically two meals. it is the awesome. i eat this salad with 32 oz of water.
-fish oil

Dinner (uh, i'll give you yesterday's, i guess):
-salmon cooked in olive oil w/ green beans also cooked in olive oil and topped with a walnut vinaigrette
-omega-3 peanut butter and celery

It's hard to do this with the new work schedule, but I'm working on it.

Morning:
-oatmeal w/ blueberries
-pineapple
-coffee
-protein bar

Lunch:
-ginormous spinach salad w/ egg, tuna, edamame, broccoli, cherry tomatos, cucmber, mushrooms, sweet potato, feta, craisins, almonds, pineapple, bacon, with asian dressing of some kind. i made this. it must have weighed 2 pounds. not much news on nutrition from work to share quite yet. oh, there was some discussion about the recent decaf coffee study linking decaf coffee with higher risk of heart disease around it being hugely overblown by the press. it was a study of only 187 people drinking 3-6 cups a day over only 3 months, and the 18% rise in non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA's) could be burned off by exercise anyway. not that i'm in any way considering going back to decaf, but it's not the recent study that's stopping me - it's my addiction/love affair with caffeine. may we never part again.
-mixed nuts

Dinner:
-roasted vegetables (carrots, mushrooms, little tiny cocktail onions, roasted red pepper) with green beans. from a frozen pack of veggies from trader joe's. there were these little things in there that confused me since they were shaped like little hershey's kisses and not like any vegetable i had ever seen, but they turned out to be little frozen hershey's kisses made of butter and herbs that melted in the pan as i cooked them. fascinating.
-butternut squash soup
-turkey chili
-3-bean salad
-omega-3 peanut butter with carrots. kind of an ADD dinner. this was mostly me wandering around the kitchen in a daze and eating things that were vaguely orange-red.

Hey! Hiya. It's been awhile, huh? I've been pretty busy with the new job at Fancy University and honestly I haven't been able to update as much as I'd like/at all. I can say that I've started eating a little better, i think, thanks to the good salad place nearby for lunch and then half or an entire bag of frozen vegetables in the evening. Trader Joe's has some great bags of mixed frozen vegetables with various sauces and in various styles. I'm thinking that with the big salad and the bag of vegetables at night, I may finally be getting enough vegetables in my diet.

Today Morning:
so this morning was the commute from hell, and it was pretty much all of my own making, this hell, making it that much worse since i really have no one to blame but myself. i missed several buses because i couldn't find my pass, and then i didn't have the right amount of money, and then in an uncaffeinated and low-blood sugar state, i somehow wound up at the B.U. Medical Center, which let me tell you is distressingly far from my office and the meeting i had scheduled this morning. just thinking about it is getting me embarrassed so i'm not going to get into it. it was like i was suddenly dropped into a foreign country where i couldn't speak english and had no sense of the geography of the area, except i do speak english and i've lived in this city for four years. i was not at my best this morning is what you should take away from this complainy quasi-anecdote. anyway:
-coffee
-oatmeal w/ frozen blueberries
-1/2 yam (mid-morning snack)

Lunch:
-spinach salad with egg, tuna, cherry tomato, zuchinni, cucumber, beets, (i'm getting better with beets. i used to hate them, and i'm still not their biggest fan, but i no longer gag when eating them) sweet potato, pineapple, feta cheese, broccoli, hummus, tofu, asian ginger dressing, and maybe some other things i can't remember. this salad probably weighed a pound or so, and it pretty much my favorite lunch right now (of course, i'm too far from the falafel king and chacarero, and i haven't explored any of the many places to eat in the neighborhood, so there you go). i seem to get something like the big salad nearly every day now. sometimes if i eat at the school cafeteria there is spelt and walnuts and better hummus other stuff, but i have more or less the same salad. it is good, though. souper salad.
-protein bar

Dinner:
-asian stir fry w/ broccoli, baby corn, snow peas, green beans, onion, carrots
-yogurt w/ oat bran and blackberries
-tuna fish sandwich
i was really hungry. it was a long emotional day.

New Thoughts On Coffee

On second thought, I have decided that quitting coffee was a stupid idea. I am reading a book written by my future co-worker at Fancy University, Walter Willett. The book is called Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy, and has these things to say about coffee:

Con:
-"drinking too much coffee can give you the shakes, make you irritable, and keep you from sleeping." (duh. actually, this whole time I've tried to quit drinking coffee, I haven't gotten more than 5 hours of sleep a night. is insomia a symptom of caffeine withdrawal too?)
-"people who drink a lot of coffee may be at risk of osteoporosis or breaking a bone....increased risks with four or more cups per day have been seen in several studies, but the final answer is not in." (I have never really broken a bone, for the record, although I've sprained my ankles approx 11 times. honestly i've forgotten how many times. i own my own set of crutches.)
-"drinking espresso, French press, ot other coffee that doesn't drip through a paper filter can increase your cholesterol a few points." (he goes on to say later that cholesterol is not as important a health problem as previously thought.)

Pro:
-"coffee is a remarkably safe beverage. it's dubious health reputation, which stretches back hundreds of years, is more image than substance."
-people who drink coffee have a "lower chance of developing kidney stones", "lower chance of developing gallstones" and "fewer suicides." fewer suicides is kind of weird, but according to the Nurses' Health Study, "suicide rates are as much as 50% lower among coffee drinkers than non-coffee drinkers." coffee may be a mild anti-depressant.
-"given the body of research on coffee, it's safe to say that there aren't any major health hazards lurking in the murky depths of your cup. in short, when drunk in moderation, coffee is no threat to your health."

Welcome back, coffee!

Yesterday Morning:
-coffee
-sweet potato
-apple

Lunch:
-chicken breast with lemon-butter sauce and steamed broccoli. the chicken breast tasted like it had been cooked in a microwave, and was like eating a chicken-flavored rubber sole. otherwise, a pretty good meal. vinny t's. i had a $5 off coupon, so this was pretty cheap. not a place i would probably eat if i didn't have a $5 off lunch and $10 off dinner coupon. the place wasn't as obnoxious as i expected it would be, however. it's more trying to be a homey corporate family-style italian restaurant rather than a goofy corporate "pieces of flair" type gimmick-fest. my waiter sounded like he was from a foreign country i couldn't quite identify.

Dinner:
-3-bean chili with soy protein granules
-salmon fillet with olive oil and soy sauce
-spinach salad with delicious goddess dressing. is goddess dressing the actual name, like ranch or bleu cheese, of the dressing i love? it's like a canola oil and sesame tahini-based dressing. it's really good, but do they have to call it goddess dressing? why do salad dressings need to be gendered?
-oh, it was a little while ago (monday), but i had a chicken massaman curry (chicken, carrots, potato, broccoli, baby corn, onion, all floating in a soup of curry sauce) at the new place in inman called spice and rice, which despite its silly name and bizarre interior design, is a great restaurant. the girlfriend had sushi which was very good as well. i've had a lot of bad sushi in my life, and this was not it. reasonable prices, as well. the whole time we were there, family who i presume owned the place were taking pictures of each other in their halloween costumes. when i went to the bathroom, the guy who was dressed as batman had to take his entire costume off in order to use the urinal, and was standing there half-naked when i walked in.

hey. hi. it's been a little while. so the new job starts soon and i've been eating pretty badly for some reason and i'm tired and i think coming down with something. yesterday every thought i had was slowed down like my brain was bouncing the signal off a satellite high in the stratosphere before allowing me access to it, and today clearly that satellite has been hit by a small meteor. headaches, irritability, spaced-outedness, feeling generally like a slimy discharge. let's see if we can figure out what went wrong.

Morning:
-oatmeal w/ blueberries. nothing too shocking here. i've just run out of oatmeal, so let's see if the world ends if i eat something else for breakfast.
-decaf coffee. ok. this is the first sign that something is seriously awry. in a questionable plan to live a less useful and interesting life, i am trying to cut out caffeine and alcohol from my diet. on the former fronts i am succeeding beyond my wildest dreams, but the alcohol consumption is holding steady. i'm holding caffeine (or lack thereof) mostly to blame here, but let's continue this exercise, shall we?
-protein bar. nothing new here either.

Lunch:
-buffalo chicken salad with iceberg lettuce. what a depressing salad this was. just looking at it made me sad, and i'm sad again thinking about it. comprised of deep fried chicken fingers submerged in a spicy buffalo sauce dropped on half a head of shredded iceberg, looking at this salad was like looking at a guy who has just been served his divorce papers after 8 years of marriage because he cheated or maybe he killed someone in a car accident or did something stupid that was his fault and you could tell he knew this was coming but he wasn't prepared for the incredible sinking feeling and he's sort of looking at his hands and feet like they aren't even attached to him and he's wondering what the force is exactly that is holding him together. sometimes he's not sure he really loved her and maybe he hadn't ever loved anything and maybe no one had ever really loved him. not the real him, the person who did those terrible things. he's feeling the depths of this, connecting his sadness with all sadness everywhere, the hopelessness of it, and he hasn't shaved or taken care of himself very well and maybe he puts on whatever clothes are nearby and writes a check for milk and eggs at the store and people look at him and it's true, it doesn't look like there's anything holding him together other than tendons and skin. that guy is like the salad. no dressing or bleu cheese. served cold (the chicken). just because something has the word 'salad' in it does not mean that it has to be in any way good for you. in the back of my mind i knew this, but decided to go with the buffalo chicken anyway because, well because i didn't think it would be like this. sidebar.
-green tea. in the coffee-free world that i envision, green tea is king. i would love it just as much as coffee, if not more. maybe i just need to drink a lot more of it to make this work. thing is, i really like coffee. the desire to be healthy and drink green tea is at war with the coffee-loving part of me, and it's tearing me apart.

Dinner:
-huevos rancheros. 3 omega-3 eggs w/ tortilla, salsa, and sour cream. eaten cold because i totally forgot about picking up the farm share yet again and rushed out to meet my wonderful girlfriend at the co-op. (good stuff at the farm share. 7.5 lbs of sweet potatos! i don't really like sweet potatos, but i am going to try to eat all of them. also a big stalk of brussel sprouts. i don't really like those either, but i will also give them a try.

possible themes of the week:
"force it down week"
"just a few more bites week"
"here comes the locomotive, choo choo! chuggachugga-chuggachugga mmmmmmmm! week"
"why do i do this to myself? why?! week"
"that wasn't so bad week")

-big bowl of spinach w/ newman's italian dressing. good. i would like to see more of this sort of thing in the future. hardly any vegetables these days, though. not good.
-bourbon and water (maker's mark). this is my new drink because i really feel every sip of this drink. it is not easy to knock back a lot of this, at least for me.
-schaeffer lager. one 12 oz can. cheap. bukowski tavern.
-one boneless buffalo wing. i don't know why i ate this. i was still hungry. i didn't really eat a lot of food yesterday. nutritionally this was just me throwing up my hands. bukowski's.

a brief analysis
-strong symptoms of caffeine withdrawal
-malnourishment from lack of vegetables
-not enough healthy fats
-probably not enough total calories when taking into account 4-5x a week vigorous exercise
-maybe bourbon is not the right unpleasant-tasting liqour for me

Weekend Roundup:
Morning:
-coffee
-oatmeal w/ walnuts and raisins and probably brown sugar even though i specifically asked nicely for no brown sugar or walnuts. watery. probably instant. bad oatmeal. carberry's. good pastries and sandwiches, though. the oatmeal is probably their worst item.
-tomato and feta cheese omelette w/ brocolli, carrots, peppers, onions. pretty awesome. the feta was just sitting in a block on top of the eggs rather than in them, which is more traditional for an omelette, but that was cool. brookline cafe.

Lunch:
-almonds
-orange juice
-salmon burger w/ soy sauce
Not a lot of lunch. Perhaps they may one day be interesting or have some kind of consistent capitalization scheme. You never know. Stay tuned!

I would do like a two week roundup here, but honestly I don't feel like getting into it. I haven't been eating a lot of vegatables recently. Oh! there was a wedding in there somewhere.

Wedding:
-chicken cacciatore
-root vegatables
-swiss, cheddar, and some other kind of cheese. havarti?
-pumpkin soup? i don't exactly remember. it has been a while. soup was good though. it was nice to have a warm soup on a cold, rainy wedding day. it was the coldest, rainiest wedding i've yet been to. the girlfriend and i were forced to dance much of the time in order to stay warm. for some reason i cannot dance in a circle not touching anybody like everyone else - i have to dance and like spin my partner and do all kinds of elaborate dance things. one day i will dance at a wedding like a regular person again and not be the obnoxious overdancer. i promise.

Yesterday Morning:
-pear
-coffee
-protein bar
-apple

Yesterday Lunch:
-spinach salad w/ onion, cherry tomato, egg, bacon, and honey dijon dressing.
-green tea
-fish oil

Yesterday Dinner:
-yogurt w/ oat bran
-2 fried scallops in a sweetened smooth butternut squash sauce
-1 piece rare steak, 1 piece rare venison wrapped in bacon
-morbier cheese w/ walnuts
-4 different kinds of wine (1 voignier, 2 malbec, 1 cabernet)
went to a wine tasting "flight" to argentina, with wonderful wines and tasting foods. unfortunately, i hadn't read the description of this event properly and had assumed that i would be eating dinner there. i went there starving (having just returned from completely exhausting myself at the gym), and when the sommelier started talking about the wines for an hour, my heart was basically dying and i began hungrily eyeing the paper tablecloth as well as any stray hand that came too close. the worst part was this would-be wonderful evening was a very kind gift celebrating my new job and i was perhaps the worst company imaginable. just yawning and dying inside and feeling like a turd and acting like one too. who sucks? (was that a comprehensible sentence?) i think this concept is called dietary displacement, but i could have just made that up.
-vitamin water

Dinner:
-yogurt w/ oat bran
-broccoli w/ curry sauce
-chicken breast w/ pesto
small portions. i should have eaten more last night but i got distracted.

Today Morning:
-oatmeal w/ blueberries. back to the steel cut oatmeal. i'm realizing that the steel cut is a better deal. the rolled oats are fine and they cook faster, but the steel cut oats last seemingly forever (about a month, i think) whereas the rolled oats barely last me a week. the steel cut oats are way more dense and of course take way longer to cook. i have figured out how to cook them without boiling them over, though, which saves me from spilling boiling hot water on my weak, fumbling, uncaffeinated hands first thing in the morning.
-apple
-coffee

Weekend Roundup!

Morning:
-coffee
-omelette w/ peppers, onion, tomato, mozzarella
-omelette w/ spinach, broccoli, peppers, onion and a tremendous amount of cheese. brookline cafe. a nice little find, the brookline cafe place. kind of like a diner but not a diner atmosphere, really. it was a good place to read the sunday ny times (which was surprisingly slender this week).

Lunch:
-6 apples. went apple-picking this weekend in bolton and got macintosh, mcauon(?), and i think cortlands. oh my god i was so full of apple. the trees went up a hill and we climbed up picking apples along the way and at the top had a gorgeous view of the area and the beautiful beautiful day. the farm place also had fresh made donuts and i had a few bites of jess' caramel apple. it was my first caramel/candy apple! "I'll rustle you up something to eat."
I followed him to the kitchen and sat at a counter while Judd pulled things out of the refrigerator. He slapped together a baloney sandwich and set it in front of me. He seemed to have forgotten about the hamburger. I would have said something, but I had a pretty good idea that even if I did there wasn't going to be any hamburger.
When we came back to the living room, my mother was looking out the window through the binoculars. The sunburned man stood beside her, his head bent close to hers, one hand resting on her shoulder as he gestured with his beer bottle at some point of interest. He turned as we came in and grinned at us. "There's our guy," he said. How's it going? You get some lunch? Judd, did you get this man some lunch?"
"Yes sir," he said."

well howdy welcome back! I have been extremely busy recently as the series of tasks that I perform and am in turn paid for moved up a level in intensity to the 12-15 hour a day range and what meals I have had have been catered or restaurant-made. They have been pretty good quality meals, but I have either been just sitting around doing work or frantically running from building to building in a state of panic that rendered me nearly blind and always exhausted, so I didn't really get to enjoy them the way I would have liked. also i have gotten little to no exercise aside from the short anxiety-filled run/walks between work buildings.

Some of the things I have eaten over the past week and a half:
-english muffins w/ melted peanut butter (no oatmeal!)
-lots of salmon
-a veggie burrito
-steak flank w/ potatos
-italian chicken salad with green beans
-some kind of other italian chicken thing with mushrooms

I also went to a bunch of restaurants because work paid for it and I had no time to cook:
-tuna steak w/ green beans and asparagus. not terrible, although sweet jesus they put an insane amount of pepper on the tuna steak. i mean, why? tuna steak is pretty tasty on its own. it really doesn't need to be so coated in pepper rub that the top of the fish i completely black and all you can taste is pepper. why do people who supposedly like preparing food do this? it's like hey why don't we just take this beautiful new york sirloin and put ketchup all over it so that all you can taste is a sweet vinegary tomato flavor. come on. despite the best efforts of the kitchen, the food was actually pretty good. the vegetables were cooked with real butter, which was a delicious surprise. i hadn't tasted real butter in so long that i actually had to think about what i was tasting. tavern in the square. kind of a corporo-trendy atmosphere with lots of big screen tv's in case you hadn't looked at a screen for a few moments.
-chicken in like an onion sauce with garlic naan. fantastic. some of the best indian food i've ever had, to be honest. had a fascinating cocktail with lychee (kind of like a fleshy egg that tastes citrusy) while my girlfriend's cocktail had tamarind and was oddly spicy and sweet. the naan wasn't amazing, but it's naan so eh. tamarind bay. atmosphere was fancy. lots of well-dressed, good-looking people.
-grilled swordfish with melted mozzarella, zuccini, mint, and garlicy mashed potatos. pretty awesome. i don't remember much except that this was really really good. my girlfriend got flattened lemon chicken with za'atar and Turkish cheese pancake. hers was pretty good too, although the pancake tasted like it was goat cheesey and i am not the world's biggest fan of goat cheese. she likes it, however, so we were both very happy. oleana. atmosphere is fancy but warm. lots of people who wear clothing that looks like it could be considered artisanal "textile art" or who wear expensive-looking glasses.

Today Morning:
-oatmeal w/ blueberries
-coffee

Lunch:
-chicken fajita wrap w/ chicken, onion, salsa, cabbage(?), red pepper. kind of an unexpected lunch purchased at kind of a high end lunch place in an office building that was not where i work. pretty good but wet so that while eating it with one hand like a burrito and peeling back the foil to expose its gifts of chicken and onion, the lunch product after a time dribbled a thin chicken/salsa liquid onto my shoes. i need to get new shoes but i don't like being pressured by my fajita to do so.
<img width='1' height='1' hero in american history. i love david ortiz. i love him so much.

Today Lunch:
-a chicken taco salad. served in a largish bowl made of taco, it contained salsa, lettuce, chicken, cheese, and sour cream that looked like they had been hurled into the taco bowl at high velocity from a great height. not a tremendous amount of food all told, but not bad. i was given several samples of free chicken while standing waiting for my food. i expected the chicken to be more tendony than it turned out to be. remarkably tendon-free chicken for a cheap mexican place. />-walnuts

Supper:
-1 Long Island Iced Tea. fancy chinese restaurant version with sake in addition to the other 5 kinds of liqours. as far as most liqour for your buck goes, it's hard to beat the long island iced tea. i mean, martinis and manhattens are pretty much straight liqour, but i'm talking like mixed drinks. real martinis (with gin or vodka and vermouth only, not like the oversweetened overpriced cocktails on fancy bar menus) and manhattens say something a little different; it seems grown-up or something to order a drink that tastes bad. sometimes you want a drink that kind of tastes bad. it is strange. rarely do i feel like eating bad tasting food out of the garbage, but i sometimes do like drinks that make me cringe a little when i taste them. i am not knocking martinis or manhattens or even the overpriced oversweet fake martinis with cutesy names like the chocotini or the loganberry frostini. all of these drinks have their place. in the world of mixed drinks, though, the long island iced tea is king. there's like 5 different things in there. they were my favorite drink to make as a bartender because you could pour like 4 or 5 bottles at the same time and it looked like you were an exacting chemist, a student of booze. (for my least favorite drink to make, please scroll down.) it was my roommate's birthday. peking tom's.
-1 Bud Light. bluegrass at the cantab. it was a busy night.
-salmon fillet with olive oil, greent tomatos and fennel
-steamed kale with lemon juice and soy sauce
did you notice that i referred to the evening meal as supper rather than dinner?

Today Morning:
-banana
-coffee
-2 hardboiled eggs

Lunch:
-the always dependably good chicken kabob salad. there was a long line today, but as usual the falafel king himself recognized me and called me his beautiful friend like he does to everyone else and it warmed my heart. seriously that dude should run for office. i would vote for him. well, maybe - if it was for like alderman or selectman or something that i don't think has a lot of actual power. i bet he would handle business nicely and extremely efficiently. he'd be pretty much the perfect bureaucrat.
-green tea
-fish oil
-carrots

*old-fashioneds. old-fashioneds are such a pain to make. a lot of times you'd have to go back to the kitchen to get sugar and then you had to find the right kind of spoon to mottle everything and it just took forever. annoy your local bartender by asking them to make you an old-fashioned on an extremely busy night at the bar. for bonus points, send the drink back because it doesn't taste right and be a semi-regular whom the bartender remembers as an inadequate tipper and sloppy drunk.

Yesterday Lunch:
-chicken salad sandwich. i am generally not a big fan of chicken salad, but this sandwich was the "special" sandwich of the day at the sandwich place i went to, so i got it. it was not terrible, but not entirely memorable. primo's.
-green tea

Dinner:
-went to costco yesterday and wound up buying $225 worth of huge things. it was not my intention to spend so much money at the gigantic store. i probably should have held off on a few of the huge things, but i now have around 15 lbs of various frozen fishes. i didn't really need the gallon of shampoo, but it's not like i'm not going to use it, and in the end i guess it saves packaging so that is a good thing. anyway, i wound up sort of skipping dinner because i went shopping in a warehouse that is maybe the size of a city block. awesome girlfriend fed me almonds and propel fancy water in the car as i drove on the way home.
-when i got home i had yogurt and oat bran and blueberries
-and a chicken breast with curry sauce. i should have had more vegetables, because i did not really have any

Today Morning:
-oatmeal w/ blueberries. i have been eating the rolled oats, rather than the steel-cut ones. i found i could get the rolled oats for cheaper and i don't think there is a huge difference. these oats seem to cook a little faster than steel-cut. they also seem even more filling, if such a thing is possible. i kind of prefer steel-cut, but these aren't bad.
-coffee
-a tomato

my dreams were free of death-imagery last night, which could be a good sign.
<img width='1' thinking about a couch. maybe this is because of fall, but had a surprising number of dreams about death this past week. in one particularly vivid dream i was dead and was leading 3 anthropomorphic m&ms (not like the computer animated ones in the commercials. these were different anthropomorphized m&ms.) to heaven (which turned out to be very much like a 1940's film noir bar) but got sidetracked in a bathroom downstairs. heaven was upstairs (duh) and to get up we had to climb what looked to be some ugly fire escape-type stairs. the m&ms saw mickey rourke downstairs in the bathroom and while i wanted to get up to heaven already and don't really care much about mickey rourke anyway the m&ms wanted to chat and get his autograph. the m&ms were not very smart and i don't know how they got into heaven in the first place or why i had to take them. this was a stupid dream and i apologize for wasting the last 30 seconds of your life. there were other dreams in which i was dying, already dead or someone else was dying or already dead, but that was the only one i remember even somewhat clearly.
<img width='1' remember what i ate. so now, a remembrance of meals past.

Week Roundup:
-the omega-3 eggs with which i am still infatuated, eaten a variety of ways with a variety of other foods: broccoli, green, yellow, purple, white, and orange peppers, salsa, grated cheddar
-oatmeal w/ blueberries, apples, cinnamon, oranges, pears
-a great picnic meal of carrots, fancy crackers, creamy herbed feta and sharp vermont cheddar. went to the harbor islands over the weekend. they were beautiful. there is more but honestly i can't talk about it anymore. go to the harbor islands sometime and we'll share stories. i'll tell you about the kite festival and the people with the crazy sunburns then.
-steamed kale w/ lemon juice, soy sauce and nutritional yeast
-tomatos
-multicolored peppers and carrots w/ pesto
-chicken breasts w/ peanut sauce
-tuna salads w/ spinach, tomato, cucumber<br people making their own papas fritas stuff? maybe the price of potato cutters and friolaters came way down), root vegetables, 2 Amstel lights (had to drive)
-hall of fame lunches spinach salad and chicken kebab falafel salad
-lots of coffee
-walnuts, almonds, pecans, brazil nuts, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, peanuts
this is not everything but it has been a long time, people. i am all hell of a busy man right now and i have a powerful hunger. i'll eat you and everyone you love. watchout!

Today Morning:
-oatmeal w/ the type='text'>

Yesterday Lunch:
-that chicken kabob salad that i love with all my heart and stomach
-green tea
-fish oil

Dinner:
-chicken and broccolli from a new local chinese place. pretty good actually. it came with like a garlic sauce and the broccolli was cooked well and the sauce was not greasy. my girlfriend didn't seem to like hers as much (spicy chicken w/ peanuts) but that could be because she still was nauseous from the incredibly hazardous cleaning products we were breathing in the floor and bathroom of my new room (my girlfriend put her body and possibly her ability to bear children on the line for me so that i may have a nice place to live. this selfless body-sacrifice is just the tip of the iceberg of why she is the best girlfriend ever and i am an amazingly lucky guy for having her in my life. for this i am extremely grateful.) i was also nauseous and had a headache, but that did not stop my eating. i am moving into a new room that i am pretty excited about. it is bigger, and for the first time ever i do not have to plan my furniture configuration to maximize available floor space. there is enough space so that i could put my bed almost anywhere and it would be fine. i don't even know what to do with myself.
-vitamin water (grape)

Today Morning:
-coffee
-protein bar

Lunch:
-steak tips and broccolli from KnowFat. this place just opened and it still had all the new problems you would associate with a new place. the empoyees were still getting the hang of the menu, and the line got a little backed up at times. still, i like the idea of publishing the nutritional information and paying attention to whether the food served is healthy or not. the menu looks good: the steak i had was delicious and the broccolli was pretty crisp. there was a sauce on the side that for some reason immediately reminded me of a dentist's office, so i didn't really use it. the place was a little expensive and i have doubts about the accuracy of their nutritional information, but overall it was impressive.
in a corner they have like a mini-GNC with sports supplements and stuff which i found a little odd. i can't imagine they will sell much whey protein or anything there. no one really needs that stuff unless they're an athlete or something, and even then it's iffy. i wonder if the supplement companies are trying to expand their market from gym meatheads to the general health-conscious populace. for marathons i've always just had gatorade during the race and something sugary after and i've been fine with that. the fancy sports drinks with electrolytes can be awesome for hangovers, though. its probably just psychological, but i feel like i'm drinking my hangover away with those.
<img width='1' height='1' the soda fountain for more water i couldn't find a water thing and i was dying of thirst (i really drink a ridiculous amount of water. probably too much) so i took like 1/3 cup (w/ice) of diet coke which was the closest thing to water, i figured. the owner i guess of the place was sitting at the table next to me and kind of said hey next time don't do that please. crap. i felt bad. i don't steal (even on the internet) and i never drink soda anyway but i still feel lousy about taking the tiny amount of soda from the man. felipe's taqueria. (fyi, the man did not look like a felipe)
-what added up to probably 3 or so glasses of wine. went to a wine tasting. cotes du rhone, mostly, like 8 or 9 different kinds. they were ok. mostly pretty mild, although there was one that tasted like it had been aged in a rusty bucket in the sun near some horses for a couple days. other than that one, though, they were good. some of them had pretty labels. i used to judge wines by how pretty their labels were. i am not saying this is right but i have wound up making some pretty good choices based on solely on label prettiness. (full disclosure: ok i still sort of do this, choosing wines based on lable prettiness. i know what the good kinds of wine are, but the labels still beckon to me.)

Today Morning:
-eggs with green salsa and the last of the pesto
-coffee
-apple

Yesterday Dinner:
-nachos. nachos with jalapenos, tomato, sour cream, and a salsa which was spiced up with tabasco sause or something. yes, i had nachos for dinner. and i loved it.
-6 beers. 3 Magic Hat #9, 3 Bud Light. partying on a monday because my friend won some money on online poker.

Today Morning:
-oatmeal w/ maple flavoring. i dropped the bottle of maple flavor and it shattered all over the floor. the consistency of the maple substance is quite thin as it is in like an alcohol base and has an impressive splatter range. the splash "crater" had a diameter of approx 2 meters from far edge to edge and left pieces of tiny tiny glass shrapnel littering the kitchen floor. the crater was not entirely circular, since the small brown bottle (like a vanilla bottle) smashed against the floor as i was swinging my hand around (to place the bottle back on the shelf, lest you think i enjoy just standing in my kitchen swinging bottles of maple flavoring around) and lost control of the bottle while my hand was in motion, such that the bottle struck the floor with some sideways velocity. this caused the liquid to spray more in one direction rather than if it had fallen straight down and creating a circular splash pattern. it is my theory that the extra sideways velocity caused the splash area to be larger than it otherwise would be if i had simply dropped the bottle straight down with no additional force other than gravity. anyway i am trying to convey the level of mess i created as i was already late for work. basically a "holy shit" level of mess. did i mention that maple extract/flavoring stains all clothing products it comes in contact with? it does. my hands still reak of maple flavoring that is really hard to get off.
-coffee
<img width='1' height='1' of family members and it just didn't feel right. it was the rehearsal dinner so it was like getting warmed up for the big event. i have a hard time dancing in front of family members because my family makes me nervous.

Saturday:
-coffee
-some kind of watermelon that was yellow inside rather than reddish pink
-protein bar
-pressed />-like 15 top shelf drinks. tanqueray and tonic, grey goose and tonic, bacardi and coke. a fair amount of dancing. i need a refresher on my leading skills, but my dancing knowledge goes up to about wedding level, so that i do ok at weddings (not hard to do) but anyplace more serious i am way out of my element. in clubs at least you are surrounded by people so your skills aren't completely on display all the time. i am of the hands-on let's dance like grown ups school. not that i am against the dancing in a circle with your friends thing, but i like dancing with another person in like a real way too.

Sunday Brunch:
-1/2 an everything bagel w/ veggie cream cheese and 1 thin slice of lox. got to brunch a little late and found it pretty much picked clean. animals. no coffee.
-1/3 slice of sausage quiche. was almost entirely sausage.
was told by my stepmother for the 3rd time how big a deal it that i was invited to the rehearsal dinner, "even though we kept asking XXX if she really wanted you to come and she kept insisting that she wanted you." she had food in her teeth while she was telling me this.<br I don't know if you've seen the black soy pasta, but it just looks awesome all thrown on a salad. the black really sets of the white of the feta and pepper and the colors just look ridicuously pretty together. if you're looking to make an impressive looking with a little exotic touch, this is a good way to go. sadly, i had no one to show the salad to. maybe i will get a camera so you can get a sense of how nice this salad looked. i got a little teary before i ate the salad if you want to know the truth, but that could be because i was eating it alone in a basement with my girlfriend away and like some shit weighing on me, but that goes outside the strict confines of this blog's subject matter. sorry.) and diced chicken (marinaded in a sweet pepper sauce).

Today Morning:
-because i ate the same thing i always do, i will make up an alternate breakfast that i have no intention of eating ever. it's opposite day!
-McDonald's sausage/egg/cheese biscuit sandwich (i worked at McDonald's briefly in my early teens and was fascinated by the health consequences of this product. it was like eating a small tub of shortening. and not in a good way.)
-decaf coffee
-a human baby arm

Yesterday Lunch:
-chicken kabob salad with lettuce, tomato, cucumber, pepper, hummus, falafel, and tahini sauce. always a delicious salad.
-green tea
-fish oil

Dinner:
-salmon with lemon and real vanilla bean. i don't know if you've ever used vanilla bean, but it is ungodly expensive. very vanilla-y and tasty, but wow. this was an expensive meal.
-omellete with feta and broccoli

Today Morning:
-oatmeal with frozen mixed berries (strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, schnozzberries.)
-coffee

Yesterday Lunch:
-chacarero sandwich. the chacarero sandwich is supposedly a Chilean sandwich made with chicken or beef, a slice of gouda, red peppers, green beans, a green spicy sauce and an avocado-y guacamole type sauce. It is a masterpiece of sandwich design and execution. It uses (i guess) special chacarero bread that is tasty in a buttery, rich sort of way, like a portugese bread but not as sweet. just an outstanding sandwich. I have no idea if these sandwiches have anything to do with Chile or what, but they are highly recommended no matter what their origin.
-green tea
-fish oil

Dinner:
-spinach and ground beef salad with peanut sauce
-flax seed chips
-broccoli w/ chunky natural peanut butter
-1 Michelob light. it doesn't even take that much longer to cook than instant if you cook it in a large bowl in the microwave. it will boil over and cover your microwave with a concrete oatmealyness (that no amount of cursing will remove) if you don't use a big bowl. oatmeal is also good for your skin and stuff and it fills you up like crazy.)
coffee (the cheap maxwell house type stuff)<br I am back!

So I was on vacation on a lovely island off the coast of New England where they really did have pretty decent food. I mean, for an island that has to ship all of its supplies in by boat daily. Not a ton of fresh vegetables, but honestly I can't complain because I just ate a tremndous amount of food. Some things I ate:

Mornings:
Lots of oatmeal
maypo (I am still unsure of what this is exactly.)
cheesy eggs
grapefruit (grapefruit is another experience where I never really liked grapefruit before, but here I just forced myself to ignore the sourness and wound up liking it. My force of will only grows stronger.)

Lunches:
tomato soup w/grilled cheese
various salads, often including walnuts
deli meats
other soups that weren't that great
lots of pears

Dinners:
steak (!) with like a roquefort sauce. memorable.
occasional broccoli. lots of salads and al dente root vegetables
chicken breasts, pork, turkey. various meats. suprisingly little fish for a place surrounded on all sides by water. there was salmon once but it was probably from a farm in Japan.
a tasty bean and plaintain vegetable dish that I had instead of sheperd's pie because I am not a fan of meaty pies
dessert was served at nearly every meal, but I only went for the good ones, like a mini key lime pie thing.

Yesterday Morning:
-oatmeal w/ protein stuff
-apple

Lunch:<br I had another fancy dinner on Friday: tapas. So of course there were like 15 different things. I remember eating rabbit, and thinking it was good, which surprised me. and got the farm share vegetables yesterday, yet almost no vegetable consumption this week. one thing i have noticed - the farm vegetables do not go bad as quickly as the ones you buy at the store. everyone knows deep down that vegetables from the local farm are better, but this is yet another reason to get locally farmed vegetables, and in my opinion, the best one. they are aso organic, which is good, but i am not all hung up on whether my food is organic or not. if it is, great, if not, the nutritional value the food provides is more important than what kind of crap it was grown in.<br
